About the team: o This R&D team within American Expresss technology division selects the operational database technologies American Express will use and figures out how best to set them up and use them. o We define, design, implement, test, and communicate the architectures, configurations, best practices, and standards for optimal use of database technologies across the company, both on-prem and in the cloud. o We evaluate new and upgraded database versions, features, components and extensions for performance, throughput, scalability, availability, and security; and we partner with our hosting, database administration, and operational support teams to operationalize and harden OLTP technology for our top-tier financial applications. DBE Subteam: MongoDB Senior position is open to backfill the only MongoDB Database Engineer on the team. Position will need to be able to help with Couchbase engineering and with DynamodDB and Firestore in the cloud. Team is upgrading to MongoDB 6 . Currently have a Lead MongoDB Engineer on the team named Shruthi and she will coach this position. Position will work on various NoSQL databases: MongoDB, Couchbase, DynamoDB, Firestore, Cassandra, BigTable, etc. First thing person will be doing is: o Evaluating and testing MongoDB 7 (new version) as they will be upgrading their on prem databases to version 7. Have preexisting test suite of all the test cases they do for the entire Mongo engine. o Working with the support vendor to fix bugs/ problems and identify work arounds. o Writing instructions for other groups to deploy MongoBD 7 across the rest of the company. Open to considering candidates with experience in MongoDB 5 or 6 (any experience with recent Mongo versions). AWS is not a must have, but very helpful. Job Description: Responsibilities: Responsible for installing, configuring, patching, upgrading, deploying, and running MongoDB and/or Couchbase databases. Apply the above skills to use in our R&D lab by evaluating and preparing new and upgraded MongoDB and/or Couchbase offerings for use across the company, and by documenting, presenting, and explaining the appropriate techniques, patterns and best practices for our hosting, database administration and operational support teams. Note: there will be opportunities to work on other database types, including NoSQL databases in public clouds, such as DynamoDB, FireStore, BigTable and more. Qualifications: Bachelors degree. Solid knowledge of DBMS concepts such as ACID, CAP and consistency. Experience with enterprise-scale MongoDB and/or Couchbase deployments, including intra- and inter-data-center high availability configurations, fault tolerance and failover, replication, cluster management, automated provisioning, rolling upgrade techniques, backup & restoration techniques, security mechanisms, health monitoring and alerting techniques, and troubleshooting. Solid knowledge of MongoDB and/or Couchbase internals such as durability and replication settings, and performance tuning. Skill at the Unix command line. Ability to write code or script, e.g. for test harnesses or other database-related tools and utilities; e.g. Shell Script and/or Ansible. Experience as a Database Administrator and/or a Unix system administrator. Knowledge of virtualization and cloud infrastructures, and of implementations such as VMWare, OpenShift, Kubernetes and Docker. Knowledge of AWS, Google Cloud, Azure or other public cloud offerings. Knowledge of modern storage and compute technologies, including hyper-converged infrastructures.
