OSP NE3 Smart Hands As an OSP (Outside Plant) network engineer, you would typically be involved in designing, implementing, and maintaining telecommunications infrastructure that spans outside buildings, such as fiber optic cables, underground conduits, and aerial cables. Here are some basic technical skills that would be important for this role: Fiber Optic Technology: Understanding fiber optic cables, connectors (such as SC, LC, etc.), splicing techniques (fusion splicing, mechanical splicing), and troubleshooting fiber optic networks. Cabling and Infrastructure: Knowledge of different types of cables (fiber optic, copper), cable management, trenching, ducting, and installation practices for underground and aerial cabling. Network Design and Planning: Ability to design OSP networks, including route planning, capacity planning, and considering factors like signal attenuation, dispersion, and environmental considerations. Telecommunications Standards: Familiarity with industry standards and regulations (e.g., NEC, NESC) governing OSP installations, safety practices, and environmental considerations. CAD and GIS Tools: Proficiency in using CAD software for drafting network diagrams and GIS (Geographic Information System) tools for mapping and planning OSP routes. Testing and Troubleshooting: Using specialized equipment for testing fiber optic cables (OTDR, optical power meters) and copper cables (TDR), and troubleshooting network issues related to OSP installations. Documentation and Reporting: Maintaining accurate records, documentation of network layouts, installation details, test results, and preparing reports for stakeholders. Safety and Compliance: Understanding safety protocols for working in OSP environments, including handling hazardous materials, working at heights, and ensuring compliance with local regulations. *Proficient knowledge of Coax, Fiber, and ethernet cable splicing *Proficient knowledge of RF test equipment (Keysight, Rhode &Schwartz) *Proficient knowledge of related industry specifications and standards SCTE, ANSI, IEEE, etc. *Proficient knowledge of basic CATV devices and outside plant *Experience with S-parameters or MER requirements *Should be able and willing to work in a lab environment *Proficient knowledge with Amplifiers and/or line extenders *Experience with egress leakage, RFI and channel noise desired Pluses: *Knowledge of ISP (Inside Plant) is a bonus JOB SUMMARY Under general supervision, assists in the planning, forecasting, evaluation, and reports results of products submitted for qualification. Responsible for development, enhancement, and implementation of test methods/processes. Responsible for initiating, coordinating testing with other teams, tracking and completing documentation of assigned projects. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Actively and consistently support all efforts to simplify and enhance the customer experience. Participates in evaluation planning, design and engineering of lab enhancements. Integrates communication industry architectures, topologies, hardware and software into complete network configurations. Evaluates new products, makes recommendations for improvement. Assists in the development and documentation of technical standards. Implements approved methods of procedure. Works on projects/systems/issues of medium to high complexity surrounding CATV planning, configuration and optimization. Provides support across organizations. Works on one or more projects as a project team member, occasionally as a project team lead. Adheres to industry specific local, state, and federal regulations, as applicable. Knows, understands and follows company policy. Performs other duties as requested by supervisor.
