Assists scientific staff in using GIS to conduct project work. Produces finished GIS geoscience and mineral resource databases and illustrations for publication. Writes technical reports for publication. This work and other GIS related tasks (such as assisting in the acquisition, maintenance, and use of digital geologic information) will be identified by the project chief of the USGS Western Region Databases and Information Analysis Project. The data, technical data, reports, and other deliverables will be subject to acceptance by the project chief or his/her designee. Proposed candidates must have resumes that reflect their actual job and educational experience. The candidates must be identified as an employee rather than a potential employee that could be hired after award. Each candidate must meet all required qualifications. Specific Tasks: Enter data from tables into spreadsheets for statistical or geospatial analysis. Use geologic knowledge and skill to read geologic maps and literature to find and enter geologic and mineral resource data into spreadsheets for statistical or geospatial analysis. Georeference raster images using a variety of base map material and approaches topographic maps, digital elevation models and orthoimagery. Enter data into ArcGIS software using scanned and georeferenced images, text files, spreadsheets of tabular data, and (or) database files. Create and edit Federal Geographic Data Commission metadata to accompany data published as USGS Data Releases. Edit, attribute, and proof ArcGIS files (stored in file geodatabases and shapefiles). Manipulate and analyze data needed to perform modeling using ArcGIS Spatial Analyst, Geostatistical Analyst, and Image Analyst extensions. Provide digital documentation of work conducted on assigned projects, following procedures that comply with Federal Geographic Data Commission metadata standards. Create and prepare products for publications using ArcGIS, and other desktop publishing software (such as Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe Photoshop). Performers are also expected to know USGS graphics standards and produce figures and GIS products that meet those standards with little guidance. Write portions of USGS publications series technical reports for technical review and publication, as appropriate. Follow all USGS existing procedures and guidelines for content creation. Performers are expected to know standards for USGS Data Releases. Provide technical reviews of GIS databases and metadata. Inform the Technical Liaison of all equipment and data problems. Provide monthly reports to Technical Liaison/COR or their designee. Ensure that all work areas are kept free of safety hazards at all times. Required Skills: Experience using Windows 10. Proficient in using ArcGIS Pro software. Experience using extensions to ArcGIS software, such as Spatial Analyst, Geostatistical Analyst, and Image Analyst. Thorough knowledge of coordinate systems and map projections to enable accurate georeferencing of analog data. At least 5 years professional experience georeferencing analog geologic maps using ArcGIS software. Must have experience using a variety of methods including using coordinate tic marks, topographic, hydrologic, and cultural features on variety of base maps topographic, elevation models, and orthoimagery. At least 5 years professional experience creating and editing shapefiles and feature classes sourced from both raster and tabular data, including the creation and editing of attribute tables. At least a Bachelors degree in Geology or equivalent professional experience. At least 5 years professional experience using geologic knowledge and skills to recognize and extract data about rock type and minerals, geologic age, structural features, geophysical and geochemical anomalies, mineral occurrences, and mineral inventory from geologic and mineral resource maps and similar geotechnical information sources. At least 5 years professional experience creating new databases and database records using geologic and mineral deposit information from original scientific literature and company reports. At least 5 years professional experience viewing and interpreting aerial or satellite imagery for the purposes of locating and verifying the position of mineral occurrence sites and geological features. At least 5 years professional experience evaluating mineral deposit and prospect information, including grade, tonnage, deposit type, and location sourced from NI 43 101 reports, exploration company press releases and websites, and other similar materials, using GIS, and Microsoft Office, particularly Excel. At least 5 years professional experience creating geological illustrations to USGS publications standards including, but not limited to, derivative maps, cross sections, mineral deposit schematics, and block diagrams with GIS, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe Acrobat. At least 5 years professional experience with Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) metadata creation, editing, and proofing for geologic and mineral resource databases. At least 5 years of professional work experience using ArcGIS software in geologic and mineral resource studies to create, review, and publish GIS databases. Professional experience working with multidisciplinary teams, with the ability to work independently for extended periods and think critically about work assignments and deliverables.
