This is a hybrid position, so on-site work is required some days based on project and

operational demands, but WHS is a great place to work right in the heart of downtown

Madison and the UW-Madison Campus. Remote work is allowed and encouraged when

possible.

Description

The Information Technology Department at the Wisconsin Historical Society manages the

technology and computer infrastructure that drives the Agencys business systems and

automation requirements. The IT department maintains and implements systems and web

applications that support the business needs and mission of the Wisconsin Historical Society.

Under the general supervision of the Chief Information Officer the Technical Architect will play a

critical role in designing, implementing, and maintaining robust and scalable technical solutions

across various domains. This role requires expertise in cloud technologies, digital asset

management, and integration strategies. It will support close collaboration with cross-functional

teams to drive innovation and ensure seamless system performance.

This role is Responsible for defining and implementing short and long-term strategic goals for

managing and maintaining systems and software, and ensuring that all planned and in-place

system architectures are aligned with the Agencys goals. While designing, creating and

monitoring the implementation of end-to-end integrated systems, this role must promote a

balanced and focused development of systems and their maintenance no matter if requirements

change. They review new and existing system designs and make recommendations for

improving or altering the systems. This role may be involved in negotiating and administering

vendor and consultant contracts.

The Technical Architect consults with department heads and end-users to further infrastructure

development. They develop and execute test plans to check technical performance of

infrastructure and report findings. Based on findings, they make recommendations for

improvement. They develop and recommend policies to leadership for standardizing systems.

This key role is a team lead that influences policy, strategy, staffing, and priorities for the team

and agency, they also aid the Chief Information Officer in managing developer and analyst

workloads and are a technical and functional resource when issues are escalated from various

channels across the IT team. This is not a supervisory position. This role provides expertise and

architectural assistance to other WHS IT, DOA Division of Enterprise Technology, and vendor

personnel including software teams, Analysts, and Engineers. The Technical Architect conducts

research on new technologies in the field of systems development and creates and develops

plans for investing in such systems that will increase cost effectiveness, mission effectiveness,

and flexibility.

Responsibilities:

System Architecture and Integrations:

Architect and oversee integrations between various systems (e.g. e-commerce,

membership/CRM, email marketing, point of sales, DAMS, and other web platforms).

Interface with users, project sponsors, and all other stakeholders in order to determine

their evolving needs

Develop APIs, middleware, and data pipelines to enable seamless data flow.

Ensure data consistency and integrity across integrated systems.

Implement, support, and mature a Digital Asset Management System (DAMS) and

related integrations to establish a single source of truth for digital assets and metadata.

Creating architectural documentation ranging from a very high level conceptual design

to a more detailed specification. Includes conceptual and logical data models, mappings,

context diagrams, process architecture models and data flows.

Maintain system architecture that integrates key systems including web CMS, DAM, and

collections management systems

In partnership with internal and external design and development teams, implement

and maintain a state-of-the-art website, integrated with DAMS.

Ensure relevant operational and collections-oriented data readily available to report on

via Tableau

Identify and activate a Digital Preservation solution for Collections data and state

records.

Implement a scalable storage architecture that can accommodate collections growth

and preservation.

Plan, design, and request server infrastructure that aligns with project requirements and

future scalability.

Partitioning large systems into successive layers of subsystems and components each of

which can be assigned to a single team member accountable for maintaining and

improving.

Ensure system performance or reliability is not sacrificed by reductions in cost, shifting

timelines, or otherwise

Cloud Infrastructure:

Design, implement, and optimize cloud-based solutions (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud)

to meet business needs.

Ensure high availability, security, and scalability of cloud services.

Foster team culture that encourages utilization of automation and streamlined

development practices like CI/CD, DevOps practices. Collaborate with developers and

engineers to automate deployment and monitoring processes.

Identity and Single Sign-On (SSO):

Define and implement identity management and SSO strategies for internal (Entra ID)

and external (Okta) users.

Work closely with security teams to ensure secure authentication and authorization

meeting enterprise standards as well as WHS business requirements.

Integrate SSO solutions with existing applications.

E-commerce and Point of Sale (POS):

Collaborate with business stakeholders to understand e-commerce and brick and mortar

retail requirements.

Design and optimize commerce platforms, including payment gateways, analytics,

financial reporting, and inventory management.

Architect POS solutions for retail or online sales channels.

Technical Leadership:

Organize and lead software development projects; Exert oversight over multiple

concurrent development initiatives;

Provide guidance to development teams on architectural decisions; Provide technical

direction to developers and hold them accountable for best practices

Scrutinize change requests to determine the magnitude of work done and estimating the

level of effort

Stay informed about industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices.

Serve as a lead worker and mentor for developers and engineers.

Advise on methods to implement and enforce best practices for system security, access

control, and data protection, including backups, patch management, and encryption.

Set standards to create and maintain comprehensive documentation of system

configurations, procedures, and policies.

Designing and implement short and long-term strategic goals for managing and

maintaining systems and software

Collaborate with Project manager(s) on major initiatives with cross-agency impact

Performing cost-benefit analyses to determine whether requirements are best met by

manual, software, or hardware functions; making maximum use of commercial off the

shelf or already developed components

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

1. Proven experience as a Technical Architect or similar role.

2. Strong knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and associated services.

3. Familiarity with DAM systems, integration patterns, and SSO protocols.

4. Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

5. Experience as a Windows System Administrator in an enterprise environment.

6. Strong knowledge of Windows Server operating systems and Active Directory.

7. Experience with M365 products, including SharePoint, Teams, and Power Platform.

8. Strong understanding of network and security principles, including firewall

configurations and access controls.

9. Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.

10. Ability to work independently and lead a team, with outstanding communication and

collaboration skills.

11. Strong organizational and project management skills.

12. Knowledge of Project management methodologies with effective results focus within an

information systems environment

13. Expertise in C#, .NET Core, and the .NET ecosystem as a whole

14. Knowledge of object oriented design principles such as SOLID or GRASP

15. Familiarity with multiple types of software architecture (Clean architecture, DDD, TDD,

Vertical slice architecture)

16. Comfortable working in legacy codebases

17. Comfortable with version control and automated testing and deployment frameworks

(CI/CD)

18. Knowledge of industry best practices and a commitment to implementing them.

19. Knowledge of Cloud platforms such as AWS and Azure.

20. Scripting and automation skills (e.g., PowerShell, Python).

21. Familiarity with security principles, including encryption, authentication, and

authorization.

22. Ability to conduct research into systems issues and products as required.

23. Ability to communicate ideas in both technical and user-friendly language.

24. Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.

25. Ability to quickly master new technologies as needed.

26. Experience providing guidance and leadership to novice systems engineers

27. Excellent written and oral communication skills

28. Strong analytical and creative problem-solving abilities
