Platform Health Engineering Preferred Location: USA - Remote Desired Start Date: Immediate Skill Level: Senior Engineer (5-10 years of experience) Duration: 12 Months Description GitHub is looking for a software engineering contractor to join the Platform Health Engineering team. The Platform Health team is tasked with detecting, investigating, and mitigating spam and abuse on GitHub. Were seeking a contractor to focus on updating an internal node, React, and Apollo GraphQL application to the latest versions and using the latest best practices for testing and CI. Ideal candidates should have strong expertise in maintaining and optimizing software performance, experience in working with large-scale production systems, and a strong developer background. Responsibilities Improving the speed and performance of the system for users. Upgrade our internal tools libraries, specifically React and Apollo, to the newest versions. Modernize our tool stack so that we have modern features like live reload for the server in addition to the client. Reducing support and maintenance costs to increase development velocity. Update all other dependencies to newest versions so all ongoing updates are only minor or patch updates Automate as much of our update processes as possible by adopting all the tools GitHub has already developed including but not limited to Dependabot. Adopt Storybook for development and visual testing in React. Update backend to use Typescript types so that everything is consistently typed. Remove all our deprecated systems from the monolith including legacy spam queues, spam patterns, etc. Qualifications 5+ years experience writing production level code. Proven experience in software development, particularly with node, React, and Apollo GraphQL. Experience with version control systems, CI/CD pipelines, and automated testing frameworks. Strong understanding of dependency management, including identifying, prioritizing, and safely updating outdated or vulnerable dependencies. Ability to quickly understand and work within existing codebases. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear, understandable language for non-technical stakeholders. Experience working with vocal and highly engaged stakeholders, with a track record of balancing their input while maintaining project direction and timelines.
