Preferred locations: Omaha, Nebraska; Alpharetta Georgia, or New Jersey. Remote US is ok, but must be willing to travel monthly to Omaha if remote. We are seeking an experienced Senior COBOL Developer with a strong background in legacy system modernization and hands-on experience transitioning applications from COBOL to Java. In this role, you will be a key contributor to our modernization projects, working closely with cross-functional teams to re-engineer and enhance core systems, ensuring a seamless migration while maintaining business continuity. Key Responsibilities: Analyze, design, and develop new and lead the migration of COBOL code to Java, ensuring data integrity and system performance throughout the transition. Collaborate with project managers, architects, and business stakeholders to define system requirements, migration strategies, and timelines. Provide technical leadership and guidance to junior developers during the migration process. Perform system testing, troubleshooting, and debugging to ensure smooth functionality post-migration. Document migration procedures, coding standards, and best practices for long-term system maintenance and scalability. Maintain and support legacy COBOL systems as necessary during the transition period. Required Qualifications: 10+ years of experience in COBOL development, preferably on mainframe systems. 3+ years of experience in migrating legacy COBOL systems to Java . Strong understanding of Java(v. 8+) and related technologies (Spring, J2EE, etc.). Experience with databases (DB2, Oracle, or SQL) in both COBOL and Java environments. Preferred Qualifications: Experience with middleware technologies and integration tools. Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, etc.) and their role in system migration. Experience working in a DevOps environment with tools like Jenkins, Docker, and Kubernetes. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work both independently and within a team.
