Job Title: Data Scientist

Responsible for modeling complex business problems, discovering business insights and identifying opportunities using machine learning, statistical, algorithmic, data mining, and visualization techniques. In addition to advanced data analytics skills, this role is also proficient at integrating and preparing large, varied datasets, and communicating results and recommendations based on the model/analysis to both technical and non-technical audiences. 

JOB ACCOUNTABILITY/RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential Functions :

Conduct analytical research and develop prototypes (50%):

Including but not limited to:

    Predictive modeling of ETAs

    Optimization and Predictive Failure modeling of Rail Car Assets

    Fleet Utilization for Railroads and Equipment Owners

    Interchange and Railyard traffic predictions

    Data quality evaluations to support Products

    Data Science prototypes including supporting scorecards and reports 

    Data enrichment to support solutions and prototypes

Deliver analytical projects (40%):

Deliver analytical projects by:

    Working with project managers to define, schedule, and deliver results to all customers and internal stakeholders while managing reasonable expectations

    Collaborating with IT to deploy prototypes appropriately

    Creating and documenting repeatable solutions for meeting ongoing customer needs

    Communicating the results and methodology to internal and external stakeholders

Gather, interpret and translate customer needs into business problems that can be solved with analysis requirements (40%):

    Working with business stakeholders and/or facilitate data analysis opportunity discussions

    Working with business stakeholders to determine solution analysis, definition, and requirements gathering for data services

Provide analytical expertise to short-term and ad hoc requests and contribute to collaborative data analyses (20%):

    Ad-hoc requests from AAR, internal and external senior management, committee chairs, etc.

General:

    Collaborate with other data scientists to drive data analysis methodology, repeatable and structured

    Exercise judgment within generally defined practices and policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions

    Work with manager to finalize priority and deadlines, and adjust & communicate as necessary

Key Measures:

    Customer feedback and delivery against commitments

Non-Essential Functions: 

    Support and improve internal decision making

    Develop measurement dashboards

    Conduct and report industry trend and market analysis to meet industry needs

    Performs other duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES/MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS/COMPETENCIES:

Strong analytical skills with working knowledge of basic statistical, predictive and optimization models
Strong knowledge of Python or other statistical tool language (SAS, R, etc.)
Strong problem-solving skills
Strong data preparation skills; be able to access, transform and manipulate company client and external customer data in its base form (e.g. Postgres, Snowflake, JSON).
Strong knowledge of data visualization tools (e.g., matplotlib, SHAP, Quicksight) to present models and results to internal and external stakeholders
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Knowledge of machine learning models a plus
Knowledge of big data engineering toolsets a plus
Ability to work effectively with clients, IT management, business management, project managers, and IT staff
Ability to manage multiple activities in a deadline-oriented environment; highly organized and flexibleAbility to work independently and jointly in unstructured environments in a self-directed way
Ability to take a leadership role on engagements and with customers
Strong teamwork skills and ability to work effectively with multiple internal customers

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATION/TRAINING:

Strong technical background with programming, mathematics, and statistics experience
Bachelors degree in quantitative field (e.g., applied mathematics, statistics, physics, computer science, operations research, business, economics) with relevant practical experience OR 5+ years of relevant work experience in a professional environment
Advanced degree in quantitative field preferred
